What is a district nurse?
The District Nurse is a Registered Nurse who works in the SCCSD Nursing Services Department. Currently, SCCSD has two District Nurses to provide medical services to assigned schools, according to a schedule determined annually.
Who are your district nurses?
The District Nurses spend the majority of their day visiting the school buildings. However, their main office is located in the D.B. Floyd, Jr. Administration Building, 702 Hwy. 82 East, Indianola, 38751. The mailing address is P.O. Box 70, Indianola, 38751.
When are nursing services available?
The District Nurse will provide health-related services to most schools at least one time a week. Every effort will be made to be flexible within the framework of a schedule so that minor emergencies and “ASAP” situations at specific schools can be managed in a prompt manner.
What do district nurses do?
District Nurses support students’ wellbeing in order to enhance student learning AND support staff wellbeing so that they can educate the student. District Nurses coordinate health-related programs and provide the following services:
- Illness, injury assessments and first aid interventions
- Health assessments/participation in Individualized Education Plan development
- Pediatric nursing procedures: gastrostomy feedings, tracheostomy care, catheterization
- Chronic disease management and education (i.e. Diabetes, Seizures, Asthma and Severe Allergies)
- Individualized Healthcare Plans and services for students with disabilities and/or health conditions that interfere with learning.
- Medication administration and monitoring
- Guidelines for school district health policies, goals and objectives
- School/community/health care provider liaison
- Assist the Child Nutrition Department with completing the MS Healthy Schools Self-Assessment
- Health Counseling for Staff, Students & Parents when appropriate
How is a student referred to the district nurse?
The teacher, Principal or Principal Designee will refer students for nursing services by email or phone contact.
How are unscheduled or urgent health-related issues addressed?
A phone request should be made to Nurse Hibbler @ 662-207-9314 (DHM, AWJ, RCE, RCHS, RM, ESE & MC) or Nurse Wilson @ 662-207-2134 (IES, GHS/ICTC, CES/IAAC, RLM & LES). The Principal or Principal Designee will contact the appropriate District Nurse to arrange for any unscheduled or urgent services. It is vital that the caller provide the following information so that any life-threatening condition can be identified:
- Description of immediate problem
- Any active chronic disease
- Present symptoms
- Onset of problem
- Known or suspected causes of present problem
